The Creative process

A picture is worth a thousand words

Unfortunately I can not picture things in my head. I think in words. And while that might not sound too bad, it makes it difficult to code things such as the flowchart below. This was a school project  which tasked us to create and showcase a new work that outlines the ideas and effects of both Imposter Syndrome and the Dunning-Kruger effect. We were instructed to create a project in the format that best plays ro our strengths and goals. I chose to create a flowchart as part of my website.  Initially the idea was to make it entirely a decisions chart where each "yes" or "no" on a level would take you to another level in the direction of either Imposter Syndrome or Dunning-Kruger effect. But due to time constraints I changed my project to a simpler flowchart where just the bottom row. was interactive and displayed information relevant to that side of the chart (either Imposter Syndrome or Dunning-Kruger effect.

While I say "simpler" it really was not that simple. As mentioned, I do not picture images in my head and, when it comes to coding, too many words can jumble in my head. So I draw things out. I studied both Imposter Syndrome and Dunning-Kruger effect and narrowed the information to just a few key points of each cognitive bias. I created a simple flow chart using the Freeform app. I then printed it out and wrote key identifiers on each part of the chart. This made the job of coding with HTML and CSS much more straightforward. As Benjamin Franklin said, "'An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.'" or similar sayings like "measure twice cut once". In other words, don't just jump in. Take the time to make sure things make sense.

Creating the project

The final design

This is the final design for my flowchart, created with Freeform on my computur.

step 2 of the process, labeling the image

Paper is marked up and ready to start coding

Coding begins ....

Coding begins: I started by simply adding all the points identified in the previous step. At this point it was just a list still in need to instructions to make it look like a flowchart. But by doing this I can make extra sure all the parts are there.

starting the final layout

At this point I created the "boxes" and started to add a style sheet with instructions on what the boxes look like and where they would go.

Connecting lines added, an image and description at the top. Still needing the words added, and links and actions.

THIS IS STILL A WORK IN PROGRESS

Does the above chart make sense?

YES!

Does it fulfill the requirements of the assignment?
YES!

Could it be better?

YES!

I want the boxes to zoom in on hover & the bottom row to flip.

Can I do it?

YES!

Do I know how right now?

NO!

Even though the work is done, I am not. This is a continuing project for my own learning.
